Development of materials through the scientific approach
to improve mathematical creative thinking

Abstract: Cubes and cuboid are part of
polyhedron that students learn in class of VIII. To
understand the concept of cubes and cuboid must be
supported by thinking skills, appropriate learning
approaches and well-designed teaching materials that
meet the valid and practical criteria. The purpose of
this research is to develop the teaching material of
cube and cuboid through scientific approach to improve
the ability of creative mathematical thinking of junior
high school students. This type of research can be
classified as research development. The process of
developing learning tools using 4D (define, design,
develop, disseminate) Thiagarajan model combined with
Zulkardi's development procedure. Instruments in this
research are the materials assessment sheets,
questionnaire of student response to teaching materials,
questionnaire of practically use teaching materials by
teachers and test results learning. The sample subjects
in this research were 100 students of Junior High School
(SMP) class of VIII in West Bandung regency, West Java
Province, Indonesia. Data analysis techniques that used
in this research are descriptive analysis, qualitative
and inferential. The result of the research is the
material of cube material and cuboid for class of VIII
learning through scientific approach to improve the
mathematical creative thinking that fulfill the valid
and practical criteria. This research is one of the
preliminary doctoral dissertation research that expected
to facilitate the dissertation research process.
