Abstract: In
this study, bitumen-in-water emulsion was formed in the
aqueous solution containing 0.5 %w/w of hydrophilic
polymeric surfactant; Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) and
dissolved salt ranging from 0.5 – 3.5 %w/w. The rate of
water separation from the emulsion was monitored in the
real time by subjecting the emulsions to gravity
settling under isothermal condition. Data collected were
used in developing a kinetic model to predict the
stability of the emulsion. It was observed that the
destabilization constant Ks decreased when the salt
content in the aqueous phase increased to 0.5 %w/w, and
increased thereafter from salt content of 1 %w/w to 3.5
%w/w. The model developed has been found to be adequate
in predicting the emulsion stability.
