Abstract:
Magnesium alloys have a good prospect application in
automobile and aerospace industries owing to their
excellent properties such as low density and high
specific strength. Components made of magnesium alloys
in these industries may experience very long life
service which more than 108 cycles. Therefore, fatigue
strength and fracture mechanism of the alloys in very
high cycle regime is of great interest. In this paper,
the fatigue strength and the crack behaviour of as-cast
magnesium alloy AZ31 was investigated in the very high
cycle domain under ultrasonic fatigue in ambient air at
room temperature. The effects of frequency on the crack
growth behaviour and fracture mechanism was evaluated by
comparing the results with those under conventional
fatigue.
