Study of mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining
activities in Sudan

Abstract: In
many developing countries, Hg is used to extract gold
from ore by artisanal gold mining industry. However,
contamination of mercury may threat local communities
and lead to serious health problems. It has been
indicated that more than 1 million people in Sudan are
involved in artisanal gold mining activity. The aim with
study to determine the level of pollution caused by
mercury (Hg) and health effect from the artisanal gold
mining in human hair in Sudan. We collected 30 hair
samples from Sudan to detect Hg from three different
groups from mining workers. The results showed Hg had
high concentration in the samples.
