Title:
ß-Naphthol in Micellar Media - A Fluorescence Study
Authors:

Abstract:
Fluorescence study of ß-naphthol has been done in
micellar core of certain surfactants used for study are
nonionic as well as ionic ones. The fluorescence peak
height at 355-360 nm increases on increasing the
concentration of nonionic surfactant solution reaching a
limiting value. Enhancement in fluorescence intensity of
ß-naphthol is very small with all the three anionic
surfactants used. On initial addition of CTAB and CDBAC,
a small enhancement in the emission intensity was
observed which further decreased at higher concentration
of these surfactants. While in CPC micellar media, the
emission intensity showed a decreasing trend.
Environmental studies of the effect of non-aqueous
solvent, ethanol, on the fluorescence spectra of the ß-
naphthol were also made. The fluorescence studies were
supplemented with absorption spectral studies and
light-scattering studies. Spectral-parameters, like
quantum yield, molar extinction coefficient and Stokes’
shift, were also calculated. All the results were found
to be in fair agreement and have been attributed to
micellization of the surfactants.
