Title:
Clean and Efficient Utilization of Low Rank Coals and
Biomass by Solvent Treatment
Authors:
Hideaki OHGAKI
Abstract:
Upgrading and dewatering are essential for effective use
of low rank coals including brown coal and lignite,
because low rank coals have assets, i.e. cheap,
abundant, low ash and sulfur contents. However, they
have deficits, i.e. high moisture content, low heating
value, and high self-ignition tendency when they are
dewatered. We have proposed a novel degradative solvent
extraction method that realizes both dewatering and
upgrading of low rank coals. In 2013, our proposal has
been accepted as one of the projects under SATREPS
program promoted by JICA-JST and the international
collaboration research between Japan and Thailand has
been started. The method has already showed the ability
of dewatering and upgrading for brown coals without
losing heating values. Besides, the method has been
applied to biomass wastes in Thailand and showed that
the chemical and physical properties of the extracts
were highly similar and expected to be utilized in
various purposes. In the SATREPS program we are
collaborating with “the Joint Graduate School of Energy
and Environment” at King Mongkut’s University of
Technology Thonburi and “PTT Research and Technology
Institute” to demonstrate the feasibility of this method
by setting up a small scale plant. In the presentation,
we would like to make a brief introduction of the
solvent treatment method, SATREPS program and our new
ASEAN-Japan collaborative research program under the
Collaboration Hubs for International Research Program
(CHIRP) 2015, JST.
