Abstract:
Nano Scale additives are currently gaining much interest
in polymer reinforcements due to its ability of
providing enhanced mechanical properties such as tensile
strength, impact toughness, creep, stress relaxation,
optical properties, electrical conductivity, gas and
solvent transport and many other intrinsic and extrinsic
properties with relatively low level of nano particle
dispersion in polymer matrix. Linear Low density
Polyethylene (LLDPE) is widely used for many outdoor
engineering and domestic applications due to its high
strength, impact resistance, environmental stress
resistance and broader processing window. In this
current research work the influence of FS nano
particles, on the mechanical properties of LLDPE is
investigated. LLDPE-FS nano-composite blends (1 – 8 wt %
FS) were prepared by melt mixing and was compression
moulded to prepare the samples for experimental
investigation. The addition of the FS in low
concentrations brought up an increase in the elastic
modulus and the tensile strength of LLDPE accompanied by
a significant increase in the elongation at break. A
noticeable increment of flexural modulus, flexural
strength and toughness was observed while the impact
strength was found to decrease with the addition of FS
in LLDPE. The increased mechanical properties on
addition of FS are attributed to the suppression of
spherulitic growth formation in LLDPE during melt
mixing, creating well organized lamellar amorphous
regions in the crystalline structure. The presence of FS
in amorphous regions of LLDPE offers hindrance to
molecular chain mobility and forms a three dimensional
network structure resulting in the increased viscosity
of polymer melt and reduced impact resistance in solid
state.
