Abstract:
This paper presents the study on response surface
methodology, which is applied to optimize cutting
parameters in machining of elastomers under ambient and
cryogenic condition. This procedure eliminates the need
for repeated experiments, time and conserves the
material by the conventional procedure. Focus of the
study is on understanding the influence of working
condition on the machinability of Elastomer. A series of
turning experiments under different Rake angle, Cutting
speed, Feed and constant Depth of cut has been conducted
on Cutting Force under ambient and cryogenic condition
using PSG A141 lathe (2.2 KW). Experiments are conducted
using standard response surface methodology design
called central composite design. A second order response
surface model was developed for cutting force. The
results identify the significant factors to minimize the
cutting force. The confirmation results demonstrate the
practicability and effectiveness of the proposed
approach.
