Environmental management and heritage conservation for
Udupi district, Karnataka
Authors:

Abstract: Udupi
is a dynamic region of Karnataka in India, endowed with
ecologically sensitive natural features like the coast,
wetlands, mangroves, hills (Western Ghats) as well as a
rich cultural heritage. The study area is very critical
from environmental point of view since it faces the
problem of coastal erosion, high population density and
activity along coast, salt water intrusion and solid
waste management. New industries and thermal plants are
also coming up in and around the district. Any kind of
resource be it natural or man- made are not indefinite,
even if some are, it usually takes decades for its
renewal, thus intelligent management for those and
conservation of the near extinct resources are the need
of the
hour. This paper attempts to acknowledge the dynamic
history of Udupi district, identify the issues and
potentials of its cultural heritage to help strike a
balance between the fragile ecological and man-made
resources and the development of the region.
