Geopolymer

Abstract: The
ordinary portland cement (OPC) production involves high
emission of greenhouse gases which is very harmful to
the environment. Thus an efficient substitute,
geopolymer, is being introduced. Geopolymer is an
alumino-silicate based binding material produced due to
chemical activation reaction between Al and Si
compounds. This paper deals with different parameters of
geopolymer like materials, compressive strength, curing
and durability. Geopolymer contains fly ash, sodium
silicate and sodium hydroxide which has reduced the CO2
emission as compared to OPC production Geopolymer has a
high tensile and flexural strength, produce less
expansion and has lower moduli of elasticity compared to
OPC. Geopolymer concrete is a sustainable material and
is resistant to fire attack due to its ceramic like
property and acid attacks. It is also impact resistant
and has a low curing period. Geopolymer is thus
considered as an environment friendly material and so
can be used for green building construction.
