The impact of spatial pattern along the corridors of
mega city region

Abstract: The
growth and expansion of mega cities is increasing in the
developing world in a rapid rate. At present, there are
23 mega cities in 2011 which is expected to increase to
37 by 2025 (United Nations, 2012). They are highly
dynamic in the fields of spatial, economic and
demographic growth, change in land use and land
consumption. The local regional and global markets and
the multifunctional regional connections with
international economies generate large scale economic in
the regions around the mega cities. Corridors play an
important role in the development of the region as it
act as a pull triggering force to the settlements as
well as the industries to concentrate along them for the
economic prosperity of the region. It is important to
study the corridors to analyze the regional dynamics of
the corridors for expanding regions. The regions are
identified on the basis of spatial pattern based on the
settlement, population and industrial analysis along the
corridors. This analysis of the various indicators will
be taken forwarded in a selected case study of Chennai
and surrounding regions. It will help for the
formulation of the development strategies of emerging
mega region.
