Professor  Jammi  S.  Rao         (President & CEO)

Jammi Srinivasa Rao (born 27 December 1939, Age: 77) was Distinguished Professor of rotor dynamics and vibration engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) from 1975 to 2000. He was science counselor at Indian Embassy of USA, visiting Professor at various universities abroad, and consultant to over 30+ industries. He moved in the year 2000 from academics to industry and held key positions including Chief Technology Officer at Singapore based QuEST Global Services Pte. Ltd., Chief Science Officer at Altair Engineering Inc., and President & CEO of Basha Research Corporation.

1. Early Life and Education:


Prof. Rao was born on 27 December 1939 at Madugula village, Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. His father was offical at the court of Jaipur Maharaja of Orissa at Madugula Fort, he lost his mother in his very early age and was brought up by his sisters. The most significant moment of his early life was garlanding Mahatma Gandhi at Samalkot Railway Station.

He received Bachelor's Engineering degree with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Andhra University in 1960, Master of Technology, Ph. D and D. Sc in 1963, 1965 and 1971 respectively from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

2. Career:


Academics:
Prof. Rao became full professor at Indian Institue of Technology (IIT-Kharagpur) in 1970 and later moved to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) in 1975 and Chaired the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He started a new center on Industrial Tribology, Machine Dynamics and Maintenance engineering in 1977 at IIT-Delhi. He also taught at the University of Surrey, as a commonwealth fellow; at National Institute of Applied Sciences, Lyon; Concordia University, Montreal; Rochester Institute of Technology and Gesamthochschule in Kassel, National Chung Cheng University, ChiaYi, The University of New South Wales, Sydney as visiting Professor. He also served as Science Counsellor at the Indian Embassy in Washington during 1984-88. He also served as Protem Chancellor of Koneru Lakshmaiah University from 2011-12 and President-Academics at Kumaraguru College of Technology, India.

Consultancy:
He was a consultant to over 30 industries, e.g., Gas Turbine Research Establishment, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Indian Space Research Organization amongst others in India and to Washington Metro and Stress Technology Inc., in USA and Twyflex Couplings in England, Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences, Taipower Company, Taipei and others. Notable amongst several consultancy jobs, Professor Rao led a team of BHEL engineers in successfully investigating the complete catastrophic failure of Narora Atomic Power plant in Northern India, fixing up through analytical simulations and field tests of the annoying squeal problem of Washington Metro trains, Solving the problem of High pressure compressor rotor failures due to rub from clearance, thermal expansion and rotor dynamic problems. He was a full time consultant to Stress Technology Inc. in Rochester

Industry and Corporate:
Professor Rao moved in the year 2000 from academics to industry on a permanent basis at Quality Engineering and Software Technologies, where he held the position of Chief Technology Officer and responsible for a rapid nearly tenfold growth in a four years. He has been the key figure in advancing design culture in private industry in India and in particular getting further industrial advances in the fields of rotor and blade dynamic technologies for several multinational companies, GE, Nuo Pignone, Pratt and Whitney, Rolls Royce, GE Hydro and Indian defense establishments GTRE, ISRO.
Professor Rao is also a Director on the Board of GMR Energy Group, which set up the largest barge mounted combined cycle power plant with four GE aeroderivative engines and one Mitsubishi Steam turbine in record time and successfully producing power since 2001.
