Abstract: Among the
renewables, solar energy has good potential in rural
areas of Tamil Nadu. A study to explore potential of SPV
based electricity with available barren uncultivable
waste land in households of panchayat villages was
conducted. Union of panchayat villages is a block and in
this study defined as a region. Gudiyattam is a
designated rural block in the state of Tamil Nadu and
consists of 44 panchayat villages and 1 town. This study
was conducted using available Barren uncultivable
wasteland at panchayat village level and aggregated to
Block level. Among the 44 panchayat villages, 17 having
surplus, 12 having moderate and 15 with no SPV
electricity potential. It is observed that, surplus
potential is very high and ranges from 5-8 times the
demand and sufficient to meet the needs of deficient
panchayat villages in the region. This study has found
Regional Energy planning through SPV based electricity
is a reliable alternative and has potential for
replication in other blocks.
